Generally, in this project we have four different aspects of working:

  • Wireless sensor networks
  • Low power in Wireless sensor networks
  • Using Neural Network in WSN to decrease power consumption
  • Participatory sensing

Sensing for quality of Life via Low power wireless sensor networks for distributed analysis of the quality of air; The principal goal of the project is to design and develop low power sensors and communication devices to monitor the quality of the air with a high number of distributed wireless devices interfaced to services on mobile devices to support participatory environmental monitoring.  The idea is to create a Low Power Wireless Sensor Network (LPWSN) that allows for a “non-invasive” data collection of environmental factors in remote locations and its monitoring from anywhere in the world where the Internet is available. Many mobile phones systems are also equipped with technology that tracks location, either via GPS receivers in the handsets or technology within the cellular network.

The ability to identify where in the world a bit of data was found is the basis of geographic information systems (GIS), highly useful tools for collecting, organizing, mapping, and understanding data within the context of location. The project deals with the study of a functional model of a LPWSN for environmental monitoring based on a network of cellular phones which can “measure” meaningful meteorological and environmental parameters. Using a LPWSN, a number of sensors can continuously monitor factors like temperature and luminosity and will process, store and transmit data co-operatively and wirelessly with other sensors to generate data that can then be collected and made available to users virtually anywhere on the globe. The sensors represent a technology for researchers to monitor diverse phenomena continuously and inconspicuously.
